WHAT IS STRESS?
Stress can be good for you. It can challenge and inspire, and
provoke positive life-changing events. Whenever a stressful event
triggers emotional, intellectual or spiritual growth, you know
it’s good stress you're dealing with. But it's often not
so much the event itself but your response to the event that determines
whether or not you're up against good or bad stress.
There are events that can affect your stress levels. In order
to better understand your own reactions to events, identify
where
your stresses come from. Look at the different areas of your
life so you can decide which elements are stressors for you
e.g. starting
Uni, self or parental expectations, isolation, housing issues,
addictions, exam and assessment periods.
Be aware of how you react to these situations. Some common reactions
include:
Feelings
-
Feeling irritable, anxious
- A lack of enthusiasm
- Feeling unable to unwind
Thoughts
-
Low self-esteem
- Fear of failure
- Inability to concentrate
- Worry about the future
Behaviour
-
Crying for no apparent reason
- Increasing smoking, use of drugs or alcohol
- Developing erratic eating habits
- Being accident prone
- Difficulty concentrating
Physiology
-
Perspiration, sweaty hands
- Sleeping problems
- Increased heart beat
- Headaches
- Pain in the neck or lower back
- Susceptibility to illness
- Tiring easily, feeling lethargic
Stress symptoms will give you an indication you need to slow
down and take some time to relax. What you need
to do is find the optimal
level of stress, which will individually motivate
but not overwhelm you.

thoughts and beliefs

in response to unwanted thoughts
- Meditation and mindfulness
- Relaxation training (autogenic training, progressive relaxation,
breathing techniques)
- Coaching in assertiveness techniques
- Nutritional coaching where appropriate
