Relaxation Training Brighton
Need to learn how to relax? Relaxation training is extremely rewarding.
I have had students not only from Brighton but from across the
UK.
What is relaxation training?
Autogenic training
AT is a method of learning to control voluntary muscles and the
body’s processes using deep relaxation exercises. Dr Johannes
Schultz first developed the basic concepts of autogenics in the
late 1920s. He noticed that patients under hypnosis experienced
heaviness in the limbs and a general body warmth. They became relaxed
and “passively aware”. Shultz devised a system of relaxation
exercises that, once taught, could enable anyone to enter this
state of mind and reap the benefits of hypnosis. The secret of
autogenics is that the more you practice the better you become
and the more “automatic” it is. The basics of AT
is learned over a period of several weeks.
Progressive muscular relaxation
One of the most simple and easily learned techniques for relaxation
is Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR), a widely-used procedure
today that was originally developed by Jacobson in 1939. The
PMR procedure teaches you to relax your muscles through a two-step
process. First you deliberately apply tension to certain muscle
groups, and then you stop the tension and turn your attention
to
noticing how the muscles relax as the tension flows away. Through
repetitive practice you quickly learn to recognize and distinguish
the associated feelings of a tensed muscle and a completely relaxed
muscle. With this simple knowledge, you can then induce physical
muscular relaxation at the first signs of the tension that accompanies
anxiety. And with physical relaxation comes mental calmness in
any situation. PMR is fairly quick to learn.

Breathing techniques
Deep breathing a core component of everything from the "take
ten deep breaths" approach to calming someone down, right
through to yoga relaxation and Zen meditation. It works well
in conjunction with other relaxation techniques such as Progressive
Muscular Relaxation, relaxation imagery and meditation to reduce
stress. When we are born, we breathe properly from our stomach and rib
cage. As we get older, we learn to breathe in a more stressful
way e.g. from the chest – we shallow breathe. Learning to
breath properly is a professional stress management technique which
many performers use. This way of breathing helps us to relax the
body and mind and also improves the posture and voice and helps
to build self confidence.
Biofeedback
A non-invasive electronic process for monitoring a body function
(such as breathing, heart rate or blood pressure) and altering
the function through relaxation or imagery.
