(BANT) and provide Nutritional Therapy

What
is nutritional therapy?
Nutritional therapy seeks to alleviate or prevent illness through
dietary modification. 90% of our body renews itself every three
months and the building materials come from the food we eat.
This is why good nutrition is paramount to good health.

Nutritional therapy is a complementary therapy,
which means it can work alongside orthodox medicine. It’s
a way of using food, herbs and supplements to encourage the body’s
natural healing. It does this by:
-
Correcting vitamin and mineral deficiencies
- Detoxifying the body
- Restoring healthy digestion
Nutritional therapy will also benefit you if you have no specific
illness, but want to maintain a state of optimum health.
What can Nutritional Therapy help with?
Most conditions may be helped through nutritional
therapy. Some of the issues I’ve treated include:
 |
 |
Low energy
or chronic fatigue |
| |
 |

and migraines |
| |
 |
IBS or
digestive disorders (see digestive

Even minor irritations like wind, bloating or indigestion; don’t
need to be tolerated. Nutritional therapy can help to make these
a thing of the past. Nutritional therapy can also help with emotional
and mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. Nutritional
therapy can be used to strengthen the immune system to enable the
body to fight off dis-ease and infection. It can also be used to
prevent common chronic illnesses of old age from developing.
Diagnostic tests
Diagnostic testing can be a useful tool within nutritional therapy.
I work with Individual WellBeing Diagnostic Laboratories (IWDL)
and Genova Diagnostics. (established in 1986 as Great Smokies
Diagnostic Laboratories). Tests will be ordered on your behalf
by me and will come direct to you together with an invoice
for the amount indicated. Many of the following tests can be
used
in your own home but kits requiring a blood sample will require
the assistance of your GP or practice nurse. You return the
sample to IWDL together with your payment. The test results
will come
to me. You then have two choices:
- You and I meet to discuss the results and any relevant treatment.
- I inform you of the results by email or phone. There is no
consultation.
I offer the following diagnostic tests:
Allergy
Profile/Antibody Profiles
| Food
Allergy Cellular Test (FACTest): |
Food intolerance
can be an important factor in many acute and chronic conditions,
producing delayed onset symptoms ranging from IBS, muscle
and joint aches, fatigue, weight problems, hyperactivity,
skin irritations and anxiety. The FACTest measures all types
of immunological reactions to a total of 233 different foods,
including common seasonings, colourings, additives and beverages
from a single blood sample. £245. |
| FACT
Dairy & Grains Profile: |
This
test measures sensitivities against all cow's, sheep's,
goat's and soya products as well as all grains and yeast.
A marker called tissue transglutaminase (tTGA), which is
highly specific at identifying untreated Coeliac Disease,
is also measured. £105
|
| FACT
Additives Profile: |
This
profile measures reactions to commonly found food additives. £95
|
| IgE
Food Panel: |
This test
measures acute reactions, known as classical allergies, against
20 common foods. Symptoms usually present immediately and
include hayfever, asthma, urticaria, swollen/itchy throat,
tongue, lips, gums, watery/itchy/swollen eyes, rhinitis,
colic, anaphylaxis, eczema and skin rashes. £140 |
| IgE
Inhalant Panel |
This
panel identifies classical (IgE) inhalant allergies to
20 of the most common airborne allergens. £140
|
| FACTest & IgE
Inhalent: |
This
combined panel assesses food intolerances and inhalant
allergies together. This is particularly useful for those
with hayfever and/or sensitivities to nuts or fruits. £280
|
| Candida
Antibody Profile: |
Candida
is a yeast that is part of our digestive flora, however in
some individuals the natural balance of the gut is disrupted
leading to a pathogenic form of the organism. This results
in many symptoms ranging from fatigue, bloating, diarrhoea/
constipation, muscle aches and headaches, to name but a few.
This test is used not only for detecting the presence of
the infection but also as an indicator of the stage of the
condition. £70 |
| Gluten
Sensitivity Profile: |
For the
detection of increased sensitivity to gluten, a constituent
of wheat, rye & barley leading to digestive problems
and coeliac disease. £70 |
| |
|
| Hormone
Profiles |
| |
|
| Adrenal
Stress Index: |
This
saliva test can detect imbalances in the daily circadian
secretions of the stress hormones cortisol and DHEA. Imbalances
in these hormones can indicate an inappropriate response
that can negatively impact energy levels, emotions, and
many other health complaints. These include anxiety, chronic
inflammatory conditions, allergies, chronic fatigue syndrome,
insomnia, depression, migraines, headaches, recurrent infections,
menstrual difficulties and infertility. £70
|
| Comprehensive
Adrenal Stress Index: |
This
profile consists of the Adrenal Stress Index and Secretory
IgA tests. £90
|
| DHEA
Levels: |
This
single saliva sample measures DHEA levels, a stress hormone
that decreases with age and can affect all areas of health
and wellbeing. It also allows for monitoring of DHEA supplementation,
which should be carefully monitored. £45
|
| Female
Hormone Panel: |
This
12-sample saliva test measures progesterone, oestrogen
and testosterone levels over the monthly cycle to identify
any hormonal imbalances. Common symptoms of this can include
premenstrual tension, fluid retention, excessive menstrual
bleeding, menstrual irregularity, low libido, endometriosis,
ovarian cysts, infertility, acne, and excess body hair. £150
|
| Comprehensive
Female Hormone Profile: |
This profile
consists of the Female Hormone Panel, Melatonin and the Adrenal
Stress Index. £190 |
| PCOS
Profile: |
This profile
measures various hormones, which can be helpful in identifying
hormonal imbalances in this condition. Symptoms include menstrual
irregularities, excess body/facial hair, acne, infertility
and weight disorders. £220 |
| Menopause
Profile: |
Although
menopause is a normal part of a woman's maturation, many
experience discomfort both during and after menopause. This
profile consists of the 1-Day Progesterone/Oestrogen test,
Estronex, and Osteoporosis Risk Assessment. £120 |
| |
|
| Element
Profile/Essential and Toxic |
| |
|
| Hair
Mineral Analysis: |
Hair
has the unique ability to concentrate toxic heavy metals
and essential elements. This test can be used as an indicator
of long-term mineral levels. A full interpretation guide
is provided. £65
|
| Nutrient & Toxic
Elements: |
This
test measures blood levels of key minerals as well as certain
toxic or heavy metals, including aluminum, mercury, lead
and cadmium. £160
|
| Vitamin & Mineral
Profile: |
This screen
can be used to identify deficiencies and/or excesses of many
minerals and vitamins. £280 |
| |
|
| Metabolic
Profiles |
| |
|
| Urine
Amino Acids: |
This
test measures all essential, non-essential and various
metabolic products of amino acids as found in urine. This
test can help to identify protein adequacy, gastrointestinal
dysfunctions, protein intolerance, and disorders of metabolism.
It can also assess vitamin and mineral deficiencies. £240
|
Osteoporosis
Risk Assessment:
|
This
test requires a single urine sample to measure the rate
of bone loss, which is an important predictor for the risk
of developing osteoporosis. £70
|
| Homocysteine: |
Total
plasma homocysteine levels are widely implicated in a variety
of clinical conditions and are an independent risk factor
for cardiovascular, atherothrombotic and cerebrovascular
disease. Certain key nutrients, including vitamin B12,
vitamin B6 and folic acid, are necessary for homocysteine
metabolism; therefore this test can also provide valuable
information about a patient’s nutritional status
relating to these nutrients. £70
|
| Insulin
Resistance Profile: |
Insulin
resistance/insensitivity is closely linked with obesity,
and occurs when the body stops being responsive to insulin.
This leads to higher and higher levels of insulin being
secreted by the pancreas in an attempt to maintain normal
blood sugar levels. This profile measures insulin, glucose,
cholesterol and triglycerides levels. £70
|
| |
|
| Digestive
and Stool Profiles |
| |

test used to assess the permeability of the gut wall (leaky
gut syndrome), which is associated with the development of
food sensitivities and candida infections in addition to
a build up of potentially damaging toxins. £120 |
| Helicobacter
Pylori: |
A bacteria
that is the major cause of chronic gastritis and gastric
ulcer formation. £100 |
| |
|
| Special
Profiles |
| |
|
| Chronic
Fatigue Screen: |
This
test combines the Adrenal Stress Index and Organix tests
to provide a comprehensive analysis of various factors
that may be implicated in chronic fatigue and other related
conditions. £280
|
| Cardivascular
Risk Assessment: |
A comprehensive
evaluation of cardiovascular risk, measuring various important
markers such as cholesterol, triglycerides, homocysteine,
coenzyme Q10 vitamins and minerals, as well as key inflammatory
markers. This unique test combines both traditional and cutting-edge
indicators of cardiovascular health that can often be corrected
with nutritional intervention. £140 |
| Detoxification
Capacity Profile: |
The functioning
of the liver's detoxification pathways is assessed from a
saliva and urine sample. Signs and symptoms of toxicity include
acne, bad breath, chronic fatigue, headaches, cancer, eczema,
itching skin, and IBS. £140 |
| Anaemia
Profile: |
The Anaemia
Profile measures blood levels of three important nutrients,
which are often implicated in anaemia. These include folic
acid, vitamin B12 and iron levels (measured in the form of
ferritin). £85 |

Comments on Nutritional Therapy
- Nutritional
information was invaluable as it gave me a better insight into
what vitamins/minerals and food I should be taking to speed
my recovery. L.W.
-
I always used to snore, but then I started to wake in the
night choking on mucus. Laurel worked out that it was cheese
and my
home made beer that contributed to this problem. So I rarely
have cheese now, I don’t make home brew anymore and I have
changed about the beer I drink (not so much and certain types
of beer make things worse). Laurel also put me on some herbs.
Now I don’t have any problem and my wife gets a better
night’s sleep! M.P.
-
I just had to do something about how sluggish I felt and
how bloated and headachy. When I came to see Laurel, she put
me on
cleansing herbs and altered my eating habits about. Now,
no problem – and
I’ve lost some weight. P.K.S.
-
My IBS was driving me crazy. The herbs and change of diet
from Laurel helped enormously. D.L.
- Menopause
was a time I dreaded. I couldn’t sleep properly
and felt miserable and really tired. Having the herbs and reflexology
has put me back in touch with myself – feeling fab! J.M.
- Very
good information on nutrition and supplements. M.C.
